Holy Week in Tarragona is one of the most powerful cultural events in Catalonia, recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest. From March 29 to April 6, 2026, the Part Alta (Old Town) becomes the stage for Christian rituals that the people of Tarragona have kept alive since 1550. In Tarragona, Holy Week is synonymous with silence. It is a celebration ruled by sobriety, where the most intriguing details are often hidden beneath the vesta (penitential robe), the cuculla (hood), and the armor of the armats. The image of the Holy Christ moving through the streets of El Serrallo is one of the most authentic moments of our tradition. Furthermore, it is a particularly special event for us, as the president of the ‘Presa de Jesús’ guild, Pitu Mosquits, collaborated on our Holy Week video and shared that he will be presenting his first book of memoirs on Sant Jordi’s Day. The silence as the sacred image travels along the Archaeological Promenade, framed by Roman walls, offers an atmosphere of reflection unlike any other city, given the complexity of tilting the Holy Christ to pass through the narrow Roman wall entrance. The rigor of its members and the sound of the aspirants’ band mark a route through Rambla Vella and the streets of the Old Town. Notably, they use bagpipes, unlike the ‘Ecce Homo’ guild which uses the traditional Catalan *sac de gemecs*. It is the ideal time to see the diversity of Tarragona’s religious imagery on the broad Rambla Nova. Afterward, guild members gather for traditional fraternal dinners. We especially recommend the honor guard shifts of the Armats (Roman soldiers) at the churches of Nazareth, Sant Pere (Serrallo), and Sant Llorenç, where they guard the Blessed Sacrament.
